British Columbia: A study has revealed high levels of 'forever chemicals' in the bodies of endangered killer whales.
According to researchers in the Canadian province of British Columbia, the chemical 4-nonylphenol (4NP) was found in the whales they studied. Also used in washing powder and textile matters.
The chemical can enter the oceans as runoff from water treatment plants or industrial waste.Since killer whales are at the top of the food chain, they eat small organisms contaminated with the chemical.
In the study, researchers took skeletal muscle and liver samples from orcas (killer whales) living off the southwest coast of British Columbia, a species of whale already suffering from food shortages, ocean traffic, warming oceans and chemical pollution is in danger of extinction due to these impacts.
Study co-author Dr. Juan Jose Aleva of the University of British Columbia said in a news release that the study is a wake-up call. causing their population to decline.
