 According to the World News Agency, Sri Lanka will gradually reduce the number of soldiers by a third by next year, while by 2030 this number will be reduced to 100,000.

 Sri Lanka's armed forces numbered 317,000 between 2017 and 2019, which according to the World Bank was much larger than during the 25-year conflict with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam that ended in 2009.

 According to the capital Colombo-based think tank Verit Research, the share of the defense sector in Sri Lanka's total expenditure reached 2.31 percent of GDP in 2021, but it declined slightly in 2022.
